  • The 25th Amendment, explained: how a president can be declared unfit to serve – Vox

The president of the United States has, legally speaking, a ton of power. He can fire the head of the country’s federal investigative agency. He can decide, unilaterally, to give ultra-classified information to foreign leaders. He has essentially unconstrained authority to use nuclear weapons however he sees fit.But what if the president’s closest advisers were to conclude he was unfit for office?According to former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein briefly discussed just that possibility in 2017, in the days after President Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey.Specifically, that’s Section 4 of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution. The amendment states that if, for whatever reason, the vice president and a majority of sitting Cabinet secretaries decide that the president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” they can simply put that down in writing and send it to two people — the speaker of the House and the Senate’s president pro tempore. Then the vice president would immediately become “acting president,” and take over all the president’s powers.Let that sink in — one vice president and any eight Cabinet officers can, theoretically, decide to knock the president out of power at any time.If the president wants to dispute this move, he can, but then it would be up to Congress to settle the matter with a vote. A two-thirds majority in both houses would be necessary to keep the vice president in charge. If that threshold isn’t reached, the president would regain his powers.Section 4 of the 25th Amendment has never been invoked in reality, though it’s a staple of thriller fiction. But there’s been a surge of interest in it throughout Trump’s presidency, as reports of the president’s bizarre behavior behind closed doors have piled up, and as his top officials have kept anonymously telling reporters that he’s unfit to govern.

  • What This Ski Season Will Look Like | Outside Online

This is a developing story. For the latest information on the status of resorts and protocol, visit individual resort websites.Ski season is going to happen this year. But it won’t look like it used to. Resorts around the U.S. are using input from state and local health guidelines to operate as safely as possible. In place of crowded après-ski bars and packed gondolas, you’ll see extra-long, spaced-apart lift lines, skiers in full-face coverings, and take-out lunches eaten outside. Many resorts will also require advance reservations, so be sure to check for capacity updates before you go.Beyond operating and safety protocols, we wanted to know what some of our favorite ski areas around the country have planned for this winter, so we called up places like Taos, Big Sky, and Breckenridge to see what’s on tap.

  • Leaked 2018 Strategy Proposed ‘Broader Than Oil’ Coalition to Undercut Ottawa’s Clean Fuel Standard – The Energy Mix

A top communications and government relations firm led by long-time Conservative Party strategist Jaime Watt developed a confidential plan to undercut support for the federal Clean Fuel Standard (CFS) by convincing Canadians that “fighting climate change is a losing battle,” according to leaked documents released this week by Greenpeace Canada. The strategy proposal for Canadians for Fairness in Clean Fuel Policy “was prepared in January 2018 by the public relations firm Navigator, which bills itself as ‘Canada’s leading high-stakes strategic advisory and communications firm’ and has a registered trademark tagline of “when you can’t afford to lose’,” Greenpeace said in a release Wednesday. “The document does not name Navigator’s client but proposes to build a ‘broader than Big Oil’ coalition to oppose the CFS by recruiting industry associations, companies, think tanks, labour groups, and the opposition Conservatives. It proposes a ‘secondary role for industrial players (not front and centre): Industry must be present, but efforts should appear organic and not stage managed’.”

  • Vernors Ginger Soda – Gastro Obscura

Debuting in 1866, Vernors ginger soda is one of the oldest soft drinks in the United States. Though it never earned nationwide popularity, Vernors has garnered generations of loyal fans in its native Detroit. In addition to simply sipping the soda, Detroiters still turn to the fizzy brew as a cure-all for everything from nausea to headaches. There’s even a Vernors Collectors Club, with some members possessing more than 1,000 pieces of memorabilia bearing variations of the classic green and yellow logo.Invented by pharmacist James Vernor, the ginger soda is a relic of the drugstore-cum-soda-fountain era. For years after its debut, customers could sip Vernor’s signature drink—known for its effervescence and vanilla, lightly spiced flavors—only at the soda fountain adjacent to his pharmacy. Eventually, as the beverage’s popularity increased, Vernor started supplying his syrup to other fountains and opened a bottling plant. Even after his death in 1927, Vernor’s company continued to grow. Throughout the 1940s and ’50s, a sprawling new bottling plant and soda fountain attracted throngs of locals and visitors, who wanted to sip ginger soda and the buzzed-about beverage known as the Boston Cooler, which blended Vernors with vanilla ice cream.

  • Germany demands majority of UK arrivals enter quarantine | The Independent

International travel options for UK citizens are rapidly closing down. After the Department for Transport (DfT) imposed quarantine for arrivals from Turkey and Poland, the Foreign Office says travellers to Germany from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and and many parts of northern England are required to self-isolate when they get there. The affected areas of England are the north-east, the north-west, Yorkshire and the Humber. The same applies to travellers from elsewhere in England who have visited any of those parts of the UK within the past two weeks.Northern Ireland and Wales had already been on the German “high-risk” register.“If you have been in the designated high risk areas in the two weeks prior to [your] arrival in Germany, you are required to proceed directly to your accommodation and quarantine for 14 days or until you can show evidence of a negative test result,” reads the FCDO advice.

  • 6 Easy Ways to Be a Better Skier | Outside Online

At Party Beach Ski Camps, head coaches Lyndsay Strange and Marcus Caston believe that skiing should be fun. Strange, an Olympic ski coach, and Caston, a professional skier, teach the fundamentals to everyone from junior FIS racers to recreational adults during weeklong sessions at Oregon’s Mount Hood. They operate on the assumption that you won’t work hard to improve if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, so they try to foster a genuine love of the sport. Unlike more traditional race camps, the two mix big-mountain techniques, freeskiing, and hitting jumps into their campers’ days on the snow.Even if you’re more powder hound than ski racer, a little expert help can identify bad habits and make you a safer, more solid skier. Since in-person coaching is harder to come by these days, we asked Strange and Caston to lay out the core principles of good skiing for you to practice as soon as you hit the slopes.
