Is there anything more cheerful than cities that celebrate vivid color? Whether the buildings are all painted in the same shade, or, even better, each and every house in a different color, bright and cheerful cities make not only for perfect photo opportunities but boost the mood enormously. I am not only lucky to currently call a colorful city home — Bristol, where rows of houses along hillsides stand like a box of crayons and look fabulous in all weather — but when traveling, I am also strangely drawn to places that stand out from the crowd through their extensive use of paint.I have chosen my personal favorite places, cities, suburbs, and parts of a town that all stand out for their bright buildings. They all make for lovely side trips on your vacation, and they’re just waiting for you to take great pictures. Instagram, here we come.

WINTER’S THE TIME FOR HOT toddies and eggnog, or any cocktail that combines fistfuls of spices with warm sweetness. However, due to its main ingredient, 101-proof whiskey, boilo needs to be treated with wary respect, whether drinking it by the glass or heating it on the stove.

After a day of cold winter hiking or walking in the cold outdoors there is nothing better than getting home to a warming drink. Last week, WarnerMedia, the AT&T-owned parent company of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., announced that it would release all of its 2021 first-run movies to its streaming service, HBO Max, at the same time it releases them to theaters. This comes on the heels of reports that Disney’s Plus streaming service may do the same with all of its 2021 releases and is also considering a merger with Hulu to boost overall subscriber reach.This is huge: Two of the largest film studios are moving the balance — perhaps all — of their premium movie content to streaming platforms. The move represents a seismic shift in the entertainment industry that will forever change the way film and television is produced, monetized, and consumed.

Not only that, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation report noted there is evidence tailings fluids “may circumvent [containment] systems and contaminate aquifers” and end up in the groundwater.“It really affirmed what my community has been saying for quite a long time,” Melody Lepine, director of government and industry relations for the Mikisew Cree First Nation, told The Narwhal.Lepine, who lives in Fort McMurray, Alta., still has a lot of questions. “It’s making its way to the groundwater, so is it making its way to our surface water? Is it making its way to the foods and wildlife that we rely on for subsistence purposes, our traditional foods? Are we consuming it?”The answers to these questions are largely unknown, which is a big part of the problem.In a statement emailed to The Narwhal, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada Jonathan Wilkinson said “enough is enough.” “Oilsands tailings must be addressed,” he added. “We will ensure enforcement officers will be given the tools they need to ensure polluters are held to account when environmental laws are broken.”

Yesterday, Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf said his country “failed” its pandemic response. 

Refresher: While other countries enacted strict lockdowns when the pandemic began, Sweden gambled on an open economy and voluntary guidelines, with the goal of eventually reaching herd immunity. The reality:

• Sweden’s economy shrank 8.5% in the first half of the year. 
• It’s logged 350,000 cases and 7,800+ deaths (more than its Nordic neighbours combined). On Monday, a government report said officials failed to protect nursing home residents, who account for nearly half of Covid-related deaths in Sweden.
• Hospitals are overwhelmed and healthcare worker resignations are rising. 
• Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s Dr. Fauci, admitted there are “no signs of immunity in the population that are slowing down the infection.”

While Tegnell has defended his approach, the second wave of cases this fall forced Sweden to change its tack. In the last month, it’s banned gatherings larger than eight, stopped late-night alcohol sales and moved some high schools to remote learning.

Looking ahead…EU regulators should release a decision on the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine Monday. If it’s approved, Swedish healthcare workers get dibs around Christmas. 

Photographer TJ Watt has seen more than his fair share of clearcuts through his work for the Ancient Forest Alliance. Still, the sudden transformation of an old-growth forest in the Caycuse watershed on Vancouver Island into a “bleak grey landscape” caught Watt off guard.His before and after photos, published on Instagram and featured in The Guardian, also struck a nerve with the public. “I think it’s just with the before and after it’s very plain and simple: you can clearly see what was there and what was lost,” Watt told The Narwhal. “These photos are going around the world now,” he said, adding he’d just sent a gallery off to a newspaper in France.In an Instagram post that has received more than 8,900 likes, Watt noted the photos are a series he hoped to never complete. The Ancient Forest Alliance has campaigned for months, asking the province to introduce immediate and long-term measures to protect the last remaining old-growth in the Caycuse watershed around Haddon Creek, south of Lake Cowichan.Watt said the Caycuse watershed was heavily logged in the 80s and 90s, “save for a few last groves on these slopes in the upper regions of the valley, where there they’ve kind of stood, alone, for the past 10 years or so.”Now that those groves have been logged by company Teal-Jones and he has completed the photo series, Watt said he hopes the images will serve as a stark reminder of what is at stake when endangered old-growth forests are left without protection.“This is essentially what we stand to lose, every time there is more talk and log and delays from the government,” Watt said.
