  • Microsoft’s Edge browser for Linux is now available for all users | ZDNet

    A year after releasing the first preview build of its Chromium-based Edge browser for Linux, Microsoft is announcing its general availability. The new release supports a variety of Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and openSUSE. Microsoft announced Linux on Edge’s availability milestone during the first day of its Ignite IT Pro conference.

    As of the release of Edge for Linux to the “stable” (mainstream user) channel, Edge is now available on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Linux.

    As it did when introducing the new Edge on macOS, Microsoft has been positioning Edge on Linux as more of an offering for IT pros and developers who want to test web sites than as a browser for “normal” users on those platforms.     A dense fog rolls in from the ocean on a cool, wet summer morning in Gaw Old Masset, a small village at the north end of the Haida Gwaii archipelago in B.C. In a gravel parking lot pockmarked by puddles, about a dozen field workers prepare for a day in the bush looking for one of the most endangered species on the planet, stads k’un, a subspecies of the northern goshawk. Jonas Prevost wears a backwards ball cap over his thick curls and his unshaven face sports an infectious grin. In his mid-20s, he’s been working for the Council of the Haida Nation since he was 17.“My náan [grandmother] lives just over there,” he says, pointing to a cluster of houses. “I just kept coming and asking them for a job until they said ‘yes.’ ” Ever since, Prevost has worked on eradicating invasive species in protected areas; he’s even  witnessed marbled murrelet chicks hatch from the vantage point of his sleeping bag on the forest floor.

From the day he arrived there, Fungie set himself out from the rest, throwing fish he’d caught onto local fisherman’s boats and accompanying cold-sea swimmers as they trained.Bottlenose dolphins’ mouths naturally curve upwards, giving the appearance that they are always smiling. But locals would say that Fungie — pronounced Fun-ghee — was doing just that. It was this quality that compelled droves of tourists from around the world to visit this remote part of Ireland, and how a booming tourism industry was established at Europe’s edge.

  • Canada underreporting 80 Mt of emissions from boreal logging: report

    The annual carbon pollution from Canada’s logging sector is at least 80 megatonnes higher than what the industry reports, according to new research published on Thursday by Environmental Defence Canada, Nature Canada, Nature Québec and the Natural Resources Defense Council.The report, entitled “Missing the Forest: How carbon loopholes for logging hinder Canada’s climate leadership,” identified the undercounted emissions from logging practices in Canada’s boreal forest, which the report notes is “the world’s most carbon-dense terrestrial ecosystem.”

But arriving in the winter gives you the full experience of stepping from the snow into the warm humidity of the greenhouse—an experience that can feel like stepping through a portal into another world.
