  • The case for farming sea veggies

On a recent trip to Savannah, Georgia, I splurged on dinner at Husk, a fine-dining restaurant helmed by chef Christopher Hathcock. Of all the dishes I tried, one stood out: a tuna crudo garnished with translucent slices of watermelon radish and samphire. The samphire provided a salt-tinged jolt of flavor that seemed to wake the whole dish up. I was surprised to see it on my plate, since I’d stumbled across it growing wild on one of Georgia’s barrier islands just the day before. Sometimes known as “sea beans,” it grows wild throughout salt marshes around the globe. It’s delicious, but until recently, the only way to get it was by foraging. I’d never encountered samphire on a restaurant menu before, but I am willing to bet that we’ll see a lot more of it soon. With natural sources of clean freshwater in increasingly short supply, a number of scientists are banking on sea vegetables as a lower-carbon way to feed a growing world.

  • The Car Collection of Monaco’s Late Prince Rainer Now Has a Museum – Robb Report

Think of revved engines and race cars, jetsetters and checkered flags and one place comes to mind: Monaco. It’s almost 100 years since the first Grand Prix took place there, one that’s now part of the petrolhead Triple Crown. Fast cars are a permanent fixture there, though: Garages in Monaco resemble more a Ferrari and Porsche showroom than a parking lot.Wealth has helped Monaco stay at the forefront of high-end automobile excellence, of course, but it’s more than that. The late ruler, Prince Rainier III, was only six when that first Grand Prix took place, but cars became a lifetime obsession. He bought so many, in fact, that his private collection outgrew the garage at the palace—and so he opted to open them up to the public in 1993.

  • World’s coolest yachts: Reliance – Yachting World

My choice would be the yacht Reliance of 1903 designed by the famous Nat Herreshoff. I read the book Temple to the Wind a long time ago and could not put it down. That yacht was, for its day, such an extreme design and engineering feat, without computers and all designed and built in a short time. Herreshoff was the master in those days. The yacht measured over 200ft overall with just 90ft of waterline [the huge overhangs were to take advantage of the rating rule when heeled], it displaced 189 tons and had a sail area of 1,500m2 (16,000ft2)! It was massive and with wooden masts that tipped 200ft above the water, an 84ft long wooden spinnaker pole and cotton sails.

  • These Are Toronto’s 13 First Michelin-Starred Restaurants – Robb Report

Toronto is on the map—the Michelin map, that is.The Michelin Guide just announced its first-ever stars for the Canadian city, with 13 restaurants making the cut. Twelve of those spots were awarded one star, while just one received two stars. Overall, the cuisines represented aren’t that varied, with five Japanese restaurants appearing on the inaugural list. After that, you’ll find four restaurants serving what the Michelin Guide has termed “contemporary” food, two serving Italian and one each serving Mexican and French. The most highly rated Toronto restaurant, at least according to the Michelin inspectors, is Sushi Masaki Saito, an omakase spot serving up shirako grilled over binchotan and chutoro with white truffles. The fish comes only from Japan; the rice is sourced from Niigata prefecture; and you’ll eat it all at a 200-year-old hinoki counter.Carrot ceviche from QuetzalAlexa FernandoElsewhere on the list, you’ll find acclaimed chef Patrick Kriss’s Alo, which serves a contemporary tasting menu with Japanese influences. There, you might come across a Koshihikari risotto with porcini emulsion or a rack of lamb with Thai green curry. Kriss’s Alobar Yorkville was also awarded a star for it’s à la carte menu and desserts, with the mille-feuille with raspberry Chantilly being a “show-stopper,” according to the Michelin Guide.

  • Enough Commercial Fishing Gear Lost in Ocean Each Year to Stretch to Moon and Back – EcoWatch

“Ghost” fishing gear includes the lost, abandoned or discarded fishing nets, lines and hooks that pollute the world’s oceans and entangle marine mammals, sea turtles, sharks and seabirds, leading to slow and painful deaths from suffocation and exhaustion. Marine habitats like coral reefs are also damaged by ghost gear. Not only does the ghost fishing gear account for about 46 percent of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), a new study has found that the amount of commercial fishing line left in Earth’s oceans each year is enough to stretch to the moon and back, reported The Guardian.According to the study, the amount of gear lost annually includes more than 25 million traps and pots and almost 14 billion longline hooks.
