  • How Doug Ford is changing Ontario’s environmental laws | The Narwhal

Just before the 2022 provincial election, Doug Ford said five words Ontarians hadn’t heard often during his first term.“I believe in climate change,” he told reporters in May, days after a deadly derecho storm left hundreds of thousands of homes without power. “And we’re doing everything to prevent it by building electric vehicles, having investment into the battery plants.” The premier’s second term has yet to see any increase in electric vehicle production, while promised investments haven’t resulted in operational battery plants so far. Instead, the Progressive Conservatives’ current tenure has been defined by battles over land use, as the government opens up protected land and weakens environmental oversight to ease development, while conservationists, cities and citizens push back against losing farmland, wetlands and wildlife habitat. Despite intense opposition, the government made its omnibus land use bill, the More Homes Built Faster Act or Bill 23, law in late November. That was followed by regulation making its Greenbelt changes official in mid-December: it outlines how 15 separate parcels of land totalling 7,400 acres, including part of the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Reserve, will be removed from the Greenbelt.

  • Mikaela Shiffrin wins 1st giant slalom in over a year, inching closer to all-time record | CBC Sports – Robert Richardson

Mikaela Shiffrin had to overcome a lot of pressure Tuesday to end her one-year drought in women’s World Cup giant slaloms. And not all the pressure on the American was coming from her rivals.Holding a big advantage of 0.72 seconds, Shiffrin found it hard to focus on her last run. Standing in the start house on top of the Panorama course, the race leader could hear exactly how well her competitors were doing.”You can hear the [finish area] announcer on the top, she’s announcing in English, so it’s really getting into my head,” Shiffrin said after the race.

  • Calls Grow to ‘Stop Building New Oil Pipelines’ as Data Shows Severity of Keystone Leaks – EcoWatch

With its latest leak of nearly 600,000 gallons in northern Kansas, the sprawling Keystone pipeline system has now spilled more crude oil in the United States than any other pipeline, according to a new analysis by Bloomberg.Including last week’s spillage of roughly 14,000 barrels of crude — a threat to the environment, drinking water, and public health — the pipeline system that runs from Alberta, Canada to Texas has leaked 26,000 barrels of the toxic substance in the U.S. over the past 12 years, Bloomberg noted Monday, citing preliminary data from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.“While Keystone is the largest spiller of crude oil since 2010, the refined fuel pipeline Colonial Pipeline’s Line 1 has spilled more liquid hydrocarbons than Keystone,” the outlet reported.

Tom Slingsby, Olympic gold medallist and SailGP winning skipper, will sail with American Magic for the 37th America’s CupAustralian sailor Tom Slingsby has signed with the American Magic team for the 37th America’s Cup.Slingsby, who has won Olympic Gold in the Laser class, the 2013 America’s Cup with Oracle Team USA, multiple World Championships, and back-to-back victories in SailGP, sat out the last America’s Cup but is widely considered to be one of the most talented helmsmen and tacticians in the world. He will return with the American Magic team, representing the New York Yacht Club, for the 37th America’s Cup, which will be sailed off Barcelona, Spain, in autumn 2024.“I’m extremely excited to return to the America’s Cup arena,” says Slingsby. “The AC75s are remarkable craft, and I look forward to doing whatever I can to help our team in their quest to bring the trophy back to the United States and the New York Yacht Club. We’ve got world-class talent on board the boat and backing us on the shore, I’m proud and excited to be a part of it.”Slingsby is understood to have a US passport, enabling him to compete for the American team despite the strict nationality rules applied in the latest America’s Cup Protocol. He has previously spoken out against the nationality rule, telling Yachting World last summer: “If they’ve only got four entries in the America’s Cup, that means if you’re not part of one of those four countries, you can’t compete. And I just think that’s not fair.“If you’re from anywhere in the world – Australia, Brazil, Uruguay, anywhere – and you’re an unbelievable sailor, you should have the opportunity to compete in the America’s Cup. If you’re from France or Austria and you’re one of the top sailors in the world you should get that chance.”
