NEAR THE END OF THE 19th century, New Yorkers out for a drink partook in one of the more unusual rituals in the annals of hospitality. When they ordered an ale or whisky, the waiter or bartender would bring it out with a sandwich. Generally speaking, the sandwich was not edible. It was “an old desiccated ruin of dust-laden bread and mummified ham or cheese,” wrote the playwright Eugene O’Neill. Other times it was made of rubber. Bar staff would commonly take the sandwich back seconds after it had arrived, pair it with the next beverage order, and whisk it over to another patron’s table. Some sandwiches were kept in circulation for a week or more.

ERIK CHRISTENSEN/THE GLOBE AND MAIL Billie Holiday performs in Toronto For more than 100 years, photographers and photo librarians have preserved an extraordinary collection of 20th-century news photography for The Globe and Mail. Every Monday, The Globe features one of these images. This month, we’re celebrating jazz. Pictured at the Town Tavern on Aug. 10, 1957, jazz singer Billie Holiday made her final appearances in Toronto with a week of performances at that venue. In his review of her Saturday show, Patrick Scott pulled no punches. “The bent notes and broken phrasing that used to come with such unpredictable charm and effect are now delivered with so calculated and mannered a fashion as to be almost comical,” he wrote. Still, the artist known as Lady Day commanded respect. The Town Tavern’s in-house drummer, Archie Alleyne, would later recall that the room was unusually silent during God Bless the Child: “There was no clinking of glasses, and the kitchen staff came out and stood in the doorway of the kitchen.” Holiday died less than two years later, on July 17, 1959. It is with very heavy hearts that we have made the decision to cancel in-person Homecoming activities scheduled for September 24-27, 2020 due to ongoing health and safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
We had long hoped this would not be necessary. “HOCO” is one of BU’s most cherished traditions, and we know that many of you started making your Homecoming plans months ago.
If it is possible to come together in the spring, we will let you know. However we will continue to prioritize the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff and alumni above all else.
In the meantime, stay tuned to our social media accounts for opportunities to engage virtually in the Bishop’s alumni experience. Our team is actively exploring ways to keep the spirit of Homecoming alive in 2020. If you have any ideas, please contact Sarah Langham at slangham@ubishops.ca
For those celebrating reunion milestones this year, rest assured that we will also provide an opportunity for you to celebrate on campus in person as soon as it is safe to do so.

BEIJING (Reuters) – China has approved an early-stage trial in humans of German firm BioNTech’s (22UAy.F) (BNTX.O) experimental COVID-19 vaccine, its local partner Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical (600196.SS) (2196.HK) said on Thursday.The potential vaccine is one of the two most advanced candidates that BioNTech is working on with its partner Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and they received “fast track” status this week from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which is designed to speed up the regulatory review process.
