International Students U.S. falls

  • The number of international students in the U.S. fell 1.8% in 2019-20, the third biggest drop since records began over 70 years ago, after 2003-04 (-2.4%) and 1971-72 (-3.2%). This decline took place before the pandemic hit and has been attributed to immigration policy uncertainty. American universities are braced for an even bigger slide in the current year. New international student enrollment in the U.S. and online outside the U.S. decreased by 43% in Fall 2020, according to the latest IIE report. We’ll have a complete picture of 2020-21 next fall.
